フランチェスカ・ダ・リミニ』ザンドナーイ

Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini
The music of early–20th-century Italian composer Francesco Zandonai has largely been forgotten—with the exception of this expansive 1914 opera based on an episode from Dante’s Inferno. The melodramatic plot concerns an affair between the title character and the handsome brother of a cruel and disfigured warlord, to whom she is betrothed. Their dalliance leads to the predictable violent and tragic end, but not before Zandonai makes his case for increased recognition with a surfeit of sumptuous, luxuriously orchestrated music.

Eva-Maria Westbroek takes on the title role of Zandonai’s rarely performed epic, alongside Marcello Giordani as Paolo and Mark Delavan as Gianciotto, with Marco Armiliato on the podium.

コジ・ファン・トゥッテ

Mozart’s Così fan tutte
The last of Mozart’s legendary collaborations with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, this exuberant comedy of manners and morals tracks an ill-conceived bet about women’s fidelity and the darkly hilarious fall-out it produces. The master composer lines his score with one sublime musical number after another, and ultimately manages to communicate universal truths about both women and men, and the nature of attraction and love, even as the laughs keep coming.

Susanna Phillips, Isabel Leonard, Matthew Polenzani, and Rodion Pogossov are the quartet of young lovers in Mozart’s comedy of disguise, deception, and decorum, with Danielle de Niese as Despina and Maurizio Muraro as Don Alfonso.

湖上の美人

Rossini’s La Donna del Lago
Rossini, one of the great masters of glittering Italianate charm and spectacle, would seem an unlikely candidate to create an operatic retelling of Sir Walter Scott’s shadowy epic of clan warfare in 16th-century Scotland. But the heart of the drama is a classic love triangle—something every opera composer is comfortable with—and as Elena, the title heroine, is pursued by two tenors portraying suitors from rival factions, Rossini has the perfect opportunity to bring all of his musical brilliance to bear.

Joyce DiDonato and Juan Diego Flórez star in Rossini’s operatic adaption of Sir Walter Scott. The cast also includes Daniela Barcellona and John Osborn, with Michele Mariotti on the podium.

『ドン・パスクワーレ』

Donizetti’s Don Pasquale
Donizetti’s uproarious yet sophisticated comedy pits a clever young widow against a crusty old bachelor, who is no match for her wiles. John Dexter’s lavish production was created as a parting gift for the beloved American soprano Beverly Sills, who bid farewell to the Met in 1979 as Norina, a perfect showcase for her infectious stage energy and spectacular musical gifts, and the only one of her roles with the company to be preserved is a telecast.

Don Pasquale
Beloved American soprano Beverly Sills stars as Norina in a classic 1979 telecast of Donizetti’s masterful comedy. Nicola Rescigno conducts an outstanding cast, which also features Gabriel Bacquier, Alfredo Kraus, and Håkan Hagegård.

カルメン

Bizet’s Carmen
Even people who have never set foot in an opera house know the music of Carmen, Bizet’s iconic tale of the irresistible and free-spirited Gypsy, whose fatal attraction with the jealous soldier Don José burns too hot for them to control. The heart-pounding action and parade of energetic, toe-tapping melodies make the acts fly by and ensure that the work stays with you long after the curtain comes down.

Anita Rachvelishvili stars in the title role of Bizet’s classic masterpiece. Pablo Heras-Casado conducts a fiery staging by Richard Eyre, which also features Aleksandrs Antonenko as Don José, Anita Hartig as Micaëla, and Ildar Abdrazakov as Escamillo.

『鼻』ショスタコーヴィチ

Shostakovich’s The Nose
It all begins with an absurd scenario: A hapless Russian bureaucrat wakes up one morning to discover that his nose has gone missing. He eventually locates his fugitive facial feature, which has been masquerading as a human being, but has no luck reattaching it. Based on a satirical short story by Nikolai Gogol, Shostakovich’s adaptation embraces the surrealism of the source material, supported by a dynamic and dizzying staging by artist-director William Kentridge.

Paulo Szot stars as Kovalyov in Shostakovich’s absurdist opera. Pavel Smelkov conducts an impressive ensemble cast that also features tenor Alexander Lewis as the Nose and tenor Andrey Popov as the Police Inspector.
